This strand is the heartbeat of the organisation. It focuses on the delivery of all our community programmes, namely YELP. Our YELP programme is free for all participants and is financially supported by the consultancy and cultural change work strands. Our women specific work is heavily subsidised and offers a combination of free, paid, scholarship places and means tested places. We also rely on a number of highly skilled volunteers, board members, individual /corporate donations, trust / grant funding, philanthropy and generic fund raising modes.
Youth Enterprise Leadership Programme
Through research and development, Rainmakers’ Youth Enterprise Leadership Programme (YELP) supports these young adults by creating employment whilst highlighting awareness, promoting advocacy and user-led work, and directly addressing both immediate and longer term need. We use our own entrepreneurship engagement framework to bring together a number of organisations and industry experts to deliver a holistic and tailored service.
YELP runs over a period of 6 – 12 months including either an 8 or 12 week intensive business programme. The programme delivers business skills modules, life coaching and business mentoring, counselling, advice and guidance, anger management and conflict resolution techniques to both the individual and their family. In addition to reducing marginalisation and social exclusion, our model aims to:
- Reduce the criminogenic risk factors and associated behaviours and needs;
- Address physical and psychological need;
- Break the cycle of repeat negative and offending behaviours, and implement positive and sustained change;
- Provide productive and tangible education and training programmes;
- Establish and develop sustainable businesses and or social enterprises;
- Significantly improve quality of life;
- Conduct and disseminate research and development addressing poverty, prevention and recidivism agendas for longer term systemic and cultural change.
As a result of a successful pilot Annmarie was sponsored by Linklaters LLP to further develop YELP through the Fellows programme at the School for Social Entrepreneurs. Rainmakers have continued to receive support from both these organisations and additional pro bono, funding and development support from wider networks including PwC, the London Business School, MIMentors, AKD Solutions Ltd, the PJ’s Group, McKinsey & Co among others.
This year we have expanded our work to support with sustainability. We work with women from a range of diverse backgrounds including delivering our first women’s business course and one to one support July – December 2015. We supported women, with challenges of domestic violence, abusive pasts or had been made redundant, career breaks, returning to work after maternity and those who had lost confidence and unable to secure other work. Our services increased their life prospects and outcomes. We were able to use the tangibility of our entrepreneurial framework, coupled with our own bespoke expertise in business start up and our range of therapeutic, pastoral and strategic life management support services, to literally transform broken lives.
